Weather Note: A Wind With Opinions

Some winds pass through. This one had come to renegotiate the awning.

It arrived at two in the morning, which is when winds with opinions always arrive, and it spent an hour explaining its position: that the awning was an act of arrogance, that the camp chairs belonged two parking spots to the left, and that everyone inside the motorhome should be awake to hear this.

The cats agreed to be awake. They did not agree to be calm.

There is a kind of weather literacy you only learn by living inside your own weather instrument. Rain you can hear coming. Heat you can predict by the color of the morning. But wind — wind you learn by consequence. The ridge spot with the beautiful view is beautiful because nothing stops the wind there. The ugly spot behind the hedge is ugly for the same reason it is quiet.

By four the wind had made its point and moved on to make it elsewhere. The awning survived, humbled. The chairs were recovered at first light, two parking spots to the left, exactly as promised.
